How to freaking raise kids

I really loved the book Freakonomics, one of my best birthday gifts ever (thanks Chiribitas). There is also a blog that king of follows up topics from the book, looking at reality from an economic and statistical viewpoint.

The particular post I want to share with you deals with the factors that have a positive factor on children's education and school results. They did not run the study, but re-analysed the same that to come to the following conclusions:

• Coming from a single-parent family has a negative, but marginally negative influence.
• A great part of the difference in performance is explained by three factors:
• Children under 5 are daily read to
• Children watch more than 5 hours of TV per day
• Children are absent from school 3 or more times per month

Sobre a diferença nos resultados em testes standard em escolhas americanas:

• O facto de a criança vir de uma família monoparental tem influência negativa, mas muito pequena
• Grande parte da diferença nos resultados pode ser explicada por três factores:
• À criança eram lidos diariamente livros antes de completar 5 anos
• A criança vê mais de 5 horas de televisão por dia
• A criança falta às aulas 3 ou mais vezes por mês
