A equipa de Tariq Enver descobriu o mecanismo que leva à leucemia infantil. A partir do caso de duas gémeas em que apenas uma manifestou a doença, encontrou-se a mutação genética responsável. Uma mutação genética ainda no ventre dá origem a células estaminais pré-leucémicas. Uma das gémeas teve uma infecção vulgar, que deu origem a uma segunda mutação nestas células que originaram a leucemia. A outra gémea tem as mesmas células pré-leucémicas e um risco estimado em 10% de contrair leucemia, risco que desaparecerá com a adolescência.
A identificação dos grupos de células e dos genes que sofrem a mutação poderá levar a melhorias significativas no diagnóstico, tratamento e prevenção da doença.
The team of Tariq Enver found out how childhood cancer stes off. Studying two twins, only one of them had the disease, the research group identifies the responsible gene mutation mechanism. Still in the womb, an initial mutation create pre-leukemia stem cells, and a second mutation that can be triggered by a common infection sets off the cancer. The twin sister has the same group of cells and a 10% estimated cancer risk, which goes down to zero in adolescence.
Having identified the cell group and genes, it is now possible to enhance the diagnostic, treatment and prevention of childhood leukemia.
